ULTRAMED, INC.

RESEARCH DIVISION

Ultramed, Inc. is involved in several biomedical research projects. Our areas of interest include electrical stimulation of the CNS (central nervous system) to alleviate mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. We began studies in this area over ten years ago. The FDA neurology panel recently gave pre-approval to CYBERONICS whose impantable device provides stimulation of the vagus nerve as a treatment for severe intractable depression. This method of stimulation utilizes an implantable device (similar to a pacemaker) and the cost is quite high. The ULTRAMED methodology utilizes transcutaneous stimulators similar to the TENS units used to treat physical pain. Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) is another method of electrically stimulating the cns and is currently utilized by several progressive 'whole body health' treatment centers with good results reported in many patients. CES is totally unlike the 'shock treatments' previously used as a main line treatment for depression and the electrical currents used (less than .010 amp) are barely perceptible by the patient.

We are currently conducting studies to determine optimum stimulation intensity, frequency, and optimum electrode placement for various conditions. Substance abuse therapy may be one of the most efficacious applications for transcranial electrical stimulation and CES. As our studies progess we are developing a line of low cost transcutaneous stimulators and methodologies for optimum treatment results.

We are also involved with the development of improved cardiovascular diagnostic equipment. Our extensive experience with a broad range of state of the art diagnostic equipment has given us the opportunity to see the short comings of current cardiology diagnostics. In our opinion it is a real tragedy that a person can successfully complete a stress test and most of the current cardiology diagnostic tests and then die of cardiac arrest a few days later. Our goal is to develop equipment and methods that will better predict potential problems before they become an unexpected tragedy. Specifics of this project are confidential at this time due to possible patent issues.

Ultramed, Inc. supports much of our research and product development through the sale of preowned medical and scientific equipment some of which we have acquired for our own research, and as a service for some of our affiliates. Our principals also support this ongoing research.

Thank you for visiting us. We would be happy to hear from anyone with similar interests or comments.
